The Lincoln Lawyer, directed by Brad Furman, is based on Michael Connelly’s novel and adapted for the screen by John Romano.
In this entertaining, rather cool crime drama, Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is a wise-ass defence attorney who conducts business from the back of his chauffeur-driven Lincoln which sports the number plate - NTGUILTY. His client book is a list of every kind of low-life crim, including the leader of a bikie gang. Get the picture? This is no ordinary suburban lawyer.
When a wealthy young man, Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), is accused of the murder of a prostitute, Mick sees the dollar signs and takes on the case. This generates many twists and turns involving his ex-wife Maggie (Marisa Tomei), who works for the DA and his private investigator pal, Frank Levin (William H. Macy).
The film has a retro soundtrack with an opening credits rendition of, ‘Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City’, by Bobby Bland, which sets the tone for the film. It is a seedy portrayal of LA seen through the eyes of cinematographer Lukas Ettlin and has an excellent cast headed by McConaughey, who gives his best performance to date.
Ultimately, The Lincoln Lawyer is a good yarn with only a couple of minor dead spots. You leave the cinema hoping there will be a sequel in the not too distant future.
